Comments

Centralize your design feedback and streamline your team’s communication with comments — available for Workspace members and guests.

We’re transitioning to a new UI, and are in the process of updating our Webflow University content.

Comments allow you to streamline your team’s communication so you can build and iterate on your designs faster. Workspace members and guests can share, review, and resolve feedback without ever leaving the Webflow Designer.

In this lesson, you’ll learn:

  1. How to add, edit, delete, and resolve comments
  2. How to mention Workspace members or guests in comments
  3. How to view and filter comments
  4. How to set comment email notifications
  5. FAQ

How to add, edit, delete, and resolve comments

To add a comment:

  1. Click the “comment” icon in the top toolbar to enter Comment mode
  2. Click the element on the canvas where you want to add a comment
  3. Type your message in the input field
  4. Click Post or press Command + Return on Mac (or Control + Return on Windows) to post your comment

You can switch between breakpoints to leave comments on a specific breakpoint.

Note: Comments left on Collection pages will appear on each instance of that page. For example, if you leave a comment on a “Blog post” Collection page, your comment will appear on the page for every blog post item in that Collection.

To edit or delete your comment, hover over your comment, click the “three disclosure dots” icon and choose Edit or Delete. You can resolve comment threads by clicking the “checkmark” icon on the comment thread.

You can also unresolve and reopen comment threads from the Comments panel when the Show resolved filter is enabled. Click the comment in the Comments panel to open the thread on the canvas, then click the “circled checkmark” icon on the comment thread.

Note: If you move an element with comments to another part of the canvas, the comments will move with it.

How to mention Workspace members or guests in comments

You can @mention members or guests of your Workspace to include them in comment threads and bring their attention to a specific part of your site design. They’ll receive an email notification which includes the name of the site and the page where your comment was placed, as well as a link to open your comment in the Designer.

To @mention a member of your Workspace, add a new comment, type “@” in the input field, and choose their name from the dropdown that appears. You can type their name after the “@” to narrow down the results and use the Up and Down arrows and Return key to navigate the results and select their name.

How to view and filter comments

While in Comment mode, comments appear on the canvas and in the Comments panel. You can click on comments in the Comments panel to expand and view their threads. You can also expand and view threads on the canvas by clicking the “speech bubble” icon. Unread comments are highlighted with a blue dot next to the comment timestamp.

Note: Comments are not shown in real time (i.e., don’t update automatically). You’ll need to refresh your site to view new comments.

You can also filter comments in the Comments panel to view comments only on the current site page and/or to include resolved comments.

To filter comments, click the “three disclosure dots” icon and choose Only on this page and/or Show resolved. Resolved comments are marked with a checkmark in the Comments panel.

You can unresolve and reopen comment threads when the Show resolved filter is enabled. Click the comment in the Comments panel to open the thread on the canvas, then click the “circled checkmark” icon on the comment thread.

How to set comment email notifications

You can choose which comments you receive email notifications for (e.g., all comments or replies only) or disable email notifications for comments altogether. To manage your comment email notifications, go to the Comments panel and click the “three disclosure dots” icon. From there, you can choose All comments, Replies & mentions only, or None

Note: You won’t receive notifications for any comments you post unless you @mention yourself, regardless of your email notification settings.

FAQ

What Workspace roles can use comments?

All Workspace roles, including guests and commenters, can use comments. Comments are not available for content editors

What happens to comments when a site is duplicated or transferred?

When a site is duplicated, comments are removed from the new, duplicate site. When a site is transferred, comments are removed from the site.

What happens to comments when a site is restored from a backup?

Comments are retained when a site is restored from backup. However, it’s possible that the elements the comments were originally attached to may not exist in the backup, so some comments may appear out of context. Comments that were made on an element that no longer exists will be moved to the parent element or to the body element.

What happens to comments when a site page is deleted?

Deleting a site page removes all comments on that page.

What happens to comments when an element is deleted?

When an element is deleted, comments made on that element are moved and attached to the parent element of the deleted element.

What happens to comments when the comments’ author is removed from the site’s Workspace?

When a comment author is removed from the site’s Workspace, the comment remains on the site and the author’s name is listed as “Deactivated user.”

Can I comment on CMS items in the CMS panel?

No, it’s not possible to leave comments in the CMS panel. However, you can leave comments on Collection pages. Please note that comments left on Collection pages will appear on each instance of that page. For example, if you leave a comment on a “Blog post” Collection page, your comment will appear on the page for every blog post item in that Collection.

Can I comment on custom code embeds or interactions?

Since custom code and interactions don’t appear in the Designer, you can’t leave comments on elements that are created via custom code or only visible via animation. Additionally, you can’t comment on individual elements within a component, or on Collection items in the CMS panel.

Can I delete or edit someone else’s comments?

No. You can resolve someone else’s comment, but you can’t edit or delete it.

Is there a limit on the number of comments a particular site can have?

Comment threads are limited to 1000 per site. Additionally, each individual comment thread can have 20 replies.

Will I receive email notifications when a comment is posted?

You’ll receive (or not receive) email notifications depending on your preference. The default preference is Replies & mentions only. You can set your preferences (e.g., All comments, Replies & mentions only, or None) in the Comments panel. Email notifications are sent every 5 minutes.
