Ligature

A ligature in typography groups adjacent letters or characters into one glyph. This technique is beneficial for specific letter pairings that lead to visual inconsistencies or disrupt the fluidity of the text when typeset separately, creating a seamless connection between characters to improve legibility and visual appeal.

Web developers can integrate ligatures into webpages using a combination of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and an OpenType font format. CSS adds styling rules that govern the webpage, while OpenType fonts carry the necessary ligature data to merge the chosen characters into a single glyph.
