Model Context Protocol, or MCP, lets an AI agent connect to Webflow and work with your site. Through that connection, an agent can inspect your pages, components, classes, variables, CMS content, and other site resources.

But your site also reflects decisions that may not be obvious from those resources alone: which components to use, how classes should be named, what your brand voice sounds like, and which accessibility or SEO requirements the agent should follow.

Without clear guidance, the agent may have to infer those decisions or be told again each time it works. Agent Instructions give that guidance a place to live.

What are Agent Instructions?

Agent Instructions are markdown-based instructions stored directly on your Webflow site. They guide supported Webflow agents and compatible third-party agents connected through MCP.

They come in two types:

• Skills guide the agent through a particular kind of task or workflow, such as building with your design system, writing a product page, or adding content to a CMS collection.
• Rules define standards the agent should follow whenever it works on the site, such as class naming conventions, accessibility requirements, or brand voice guidelines.

Simply put, a skill becomes relevant when the agent is doing the kind of work it describes, while a rule should remain in effect regardless of the task.

Site instructions and agent instructions

You may already use skills, project instructions, or similar guidance in Claude, Cursor, or another agent. Those instructions are useful, but they live in a different place and serve a different purpose.

Instructions stored in your agent

Instructions created directly in an agent usually belong to your account, project, or agent setup.

They work well for:

• Personal preferences
• Guidance you use across many projects
• Workflows specific to that agent
• Instructions that do not belong to one Webflow site

Other people working on the same site may not have access to that guidance unless the skills are shared, kept up to date, and added to each person's agent setup.

Instructions stored in Webflow

Webflow Agent Instructions belong to the site itself. They give supported agents working on that site a shared source of guidance for the people using them.

They can also reference actual Webflow resources, including components and variables. Instead of describing a component and relying on the agent to identify it, you can connect the instruction to the real resource on the site.

Agent-level and site-level instructions can work together. The key difference is whether the guidance belongs to your personal setup or to the Webflow site.
