Answer Engine Optimization — or AEO — is about making sure that when people ask AI tools questions, your content is the one they find and reference. In this video, we'll introduce what AEO is and why it's becoming an increasingly important part of how sites get discovered.

The shift behind AEO is a change in how people search. A growing number of users are turning to AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews — to get answers directly, without clicking through to websites. For those users, the question isn't which website ranks first. The question is which content the AI cites.

That's what AEO is designed to address. If your content is well-structured, authoritative, and directly answers questions people are asking, AI systems are more likely to surface it, summarize it, or link to it in their responses.

This isn't a completely new practice — many of the same things that make content rank well in search also make it perform well in AI-powered answer engines. Clear, direct answers. Strong structure with proper headings. Factual, citable information. Technical health that makes your site easy to crawl and understand.

But there are also some nuances specific to AEO — like how schema markup helps AI systems understand your content, or how topical depth signals credibility. We'll cover all of that in the lessons ahead.

For now, the key thing to understand is that AEO is about positioning your content to be the answer — not just a result.
