Google Site Verification

Google verification allows you to verify ownership of a website so you can use the Google Search Console tools. These tools give you access to Google search data and allow you to submit your sitemap so that your site is indexed in Google search results.

Before you get started
You can verify your domain ownership in a number of ways. The method we describe below is the easiest way to verify your Webflow site.
You only need to verify your domain ownership once. Although you can verify a site multiple times, if your domain is already verified using another method, you won't need to use this method to verify it again.
If you want multiple users to verify ownership of your domain so they can access the Google Search Console, make sure that none of them overwrites any verification tokens of any other owners. It's recommended that they use another method to verify their ownership. Read Google's guide to learn more.

Adding your site to the Google Search Console

To add your site to the Google Search Console:

  1. Go to Google Search Console — Log into your Google account if you're not already logged in. Create an account if you don’t have one.
  1. In the field provided, type your URL and click Add a property

Now that you've added your site, you'll be taken to the verification page. Follow the steps below to verify your account.

Need to know
If you've already added and verified your domain before, adding the same domain again will take you to the property page. If you need to grab the HTML tag again, see finding a previously generated verification ID.

Verifying your site

The best way to verify your Webflow site is with the HTML tag method.

Grabbing the HTML tag verification ID

Make sure you're on the verification page. You can also access the verification page from the Search Console homepage. Click manage property next to your domain name, choose: verify this property.
  1. Select the Alternate methods tab
  2. Select the HTML tag option at the top of the list
  3. Click Show me an example
  4. Copy the Verification ID (string of numbers and letters in between the quotations that appear after `content=”`)

Adding your verification ID in your Webflow project settings

  1. In your Webflow dashboard, go to project settings → SEOGoogle site verification
  2. Paste the Google site verification ID
  3. Save and Publish so that Google can check for the ID on the live site

Verifying your site in the Search Console

Return to the Google Search Console and verify your property.

If you've closed your verification page, you can access it again from the Search Console homepage:
  1. Click manage property next to your domain name
  2. Choose verify this property, and follow the instructions
  3. Select the Alternate methods tab
  4. Select the HTML tag option at the top of the list
  5. Click verify

Finding a previously generated verification ID

If your site is already verified, you can grab the HTML tag verification ID again by following these steps:

  1. Go to Webmaster central
  2. Click verification details
  3. Click verify using another method
  4. Choose HTML tag. It will say "Already verified using this method".
  5. Click Show me an example
  6. Copy the Verification ID (string of numbers and letters in between the quotations that appear after `content=”`)

Submitting your site to Google for indexing

Once the verification process is complete, you can submit your website to Google for indexing.

Google may automatically find your website through a link on another site, but verifying ownership and asking Google to index your site will get you on Google faster.
